Garmin Nuvi 255W Review

If you are familiar with our website then you probably noticed how much we love a good GPS device. I think such devices are very useful even though you can find smartphones with built-in GPS, you can’t compare them. A GPS device has a bigger screen, and it has turn-by-turn navigation, and you’ll hear more in the following lines. Here is the Garmin Nuvi 255W which looks great, performs well, and it’s very cheap.

The Garmin Nuvi 255W review begins with the GPS’ measurements: the device measures 4.8 x 2.9 x .8-inch, while weighing 6.1 ounces. The Garmin Nuvi 255W features a 4.3-inch WQVGA TFT screen with a 480 x 272 resolution, and white backlight. The screen is not too big, but not too small either, and I have to underline the white backlight which makes it sun-readable and will not hurt your eyes.

The Garmin Nuvi 255W is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery which provides up to 5 hours of battery life. However, I’ve said it before: I don’t think battery life is important as long as you keep the GPS plugged-in so that you can have infinite power. Well, if you are interested in this then 5 hours of life is just perfect.

I don’t know if this is a drawback, but the Garmin Nuvi 255W is not waterproof therefore you can’t do scubadiving using it. The device comes with preloaded maps, basemap, but users can add other maps as well. The Garmin Nuvi 255W features a built-in SSD, but you there is a SD card slot to expand the memory. The high-sensitivity receiver is present, and there is a RoHS version available. You can choose up to 1,000 waypoints that you can set.

The Garmin Nuvi 255W features voice prompts via the internal speaker which means that it will inform you when to turn left and on which street, custom POIs, and Where I Am? feature which will inform users of the nearest hospital, police station etc.

Well, the Garmin Nuvi 255W scored 8.6 out of 10 at TestFreaks, but I would give it a 7.3 out of 10 as the GPS device doesn’t feature Bluetooth, FM transmitter, while the address input method is lame. I found these features very important, but if you don’t care about them, then I would highly recommend the device.

In conclusion I have to say that it’s a good device and the 7.3 out of 10 score is good enough. This is a very cheap device and you can buy it from Amazon for a price of $171.17.
