Motorola Atrix 4G Review

Dear friends we’ve got here for you the new Motorola Atrix 4G. This is just something else, a very special and unique smartphone, with laptop dock, HD / desktop dock, plus other accessories.

Ups! Did I just say that this is a smartphone? It’s not quite true because of the the dual-core CPU sporting the Atrix 4G and because it does its duty as a laptop, the usual desktop PC, set box etc. You can use however you want.

  • The question that bothers my, is really possible that a smartphone will ever become a laptop or the hub for a home theater ?

  • But the most important question is: this new Motorola phone will become the king of the Android heap ?

  • Motorola Atrix 4G Hardware
  • The Atrix 4G is really great when it comes to the design and the hardware.

  • The basic of the Atrix body is made of plastic, but do not panic is just made so that it feels like a pricier material.

  • 2.5 inches – wide and 4.63 inches long and not to forget the thickness is just 0.43 – this, my friends, means that this Atrix is just as nearly thin as the popular iPhone 4.

  • I really like it when it comes to the weight because it’s weighing just 135 grams.

  • The cool part at the top of the phone you can see the sleep/power button and guess what it has a fingerprint scanner, plus the 3.5mm headphone jack.

  • On the right side is the volume rocker.

  • On the left side well you will find the HDMI and the Micro USB ports.

  • The camera is packed with the 5 megapixel camera with LED flash not to forget the speaker along the bottom of the phone.

  • This Atrix 4G just is the greatest and better looking Android device now on the market, but things will probably change soon.

  • It’s important to say and notice that this device has the industrial design standpoint of the best in the market right now

  • Motorola Atrix 4G Battery Life, Display and Internals
  • This Atrix 4G device embraces the looks along with the raw power.

  • 1GHz dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage on board – among the first dual-core Android devices – it’s uber-fast!

  • With the help of the qHD that just provides the greatness on much more utility’s such as the Gmail other browsers and not to forget the content-heavy applications.

  • And the additional microSD slot for another 32GB.

  • Wow the internal is just full with horsepower the qHD display – the crystal clear display provides renders the text and images perfectly.

  • The device boasts a 960 x 540 capacitive touchscreen with Gorilla Glass protection so it’s resistant to scratches and fingerprints.

  • Not to worry the radio is there : WiFi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.

  • The beloved Atrix has also proximity sensor and built-in accelerometer along with a digital compass.

  • So to be really honest the Atrix 4G is the faster, of the hole Android phones we’ve ever used so far. We did put the device to very complex tasks and it just did well and very fast!

  • The scrolling when it comes to the home screens or managing apps and widgets is just so smooth.

  • What can I say when I see that the new Android devices just keep on taking higher resolution screens well I’m so happy as far as the displays goes.

  • The display made it true with all of our test is pretty amazing. The touch response are fast and slick because of the super fast CPU.

  • Okay so here is the first small problem when you use the device at bright daylight then you will see that the brightness adjustment doesn’t to its job properly.

  • The battery life of the Atrix 4G just is so impressive because it comes with a 1930mAh battery inside.

  • The power of this battery is really improved you can get much more time out of the Atrix 4G if you check the brightness and other battery-loving settings.

  • Motorola Atrix 4G Camera
  • Here comes the arsenal on the Atrix 4G, the 5 megapixel shooter that is on the back of the phone.

  • You are able to take shots in the both high and the low light using the the quickly customizable settings.

  • The camera is so cool because it has 720p video and not to forget the amazing HD capturing results of the device.

  • If you wonder how it works in the low light then rest assured friends, it does the job just great.

  • The macro capabilities of the camera are impressing, too, while the front-facing VGA camera it’s there just for video conferencing so you can’t expect any performances from it.

  • The camera is not as good as the one found on the Nokia N8 or some HTC devices which boost a 8-megapixel camera, but it’s decent enough for a smartphone / web top.

Motorola Atrix 4G Sound Quality and the Phone

  • The guys at Motorola have a great reputation when it comes to the sound quality and this device doesn’t disappoint.

  • The great part at the ear-piece of the Atrix 4G is just exceptionally clear.

  • The audio greatness dose not stop on the ear-piece, well let me tell you a couple of things about the speaker.

  • On the back it’s packing a full-bodied audio speaker.

  • So when you are listening to the music or better you are on the speaker-phone, then you will be amazed by the sound quality.

  • The results when in a phone call were pretty awesome, too.

  • Reception was good, but the usual dropped calls were still there though the problem comes from AT&T probably in all cases.

  • Motorola Atrix 4G Software

  • If you are searching for the stock Android experience, then you probably  know that this is not the device for you.

  • The guys at Motorola are just trading customers to the customized Froyo (2.2) with Motoblur UI.

  • The first thing that I think is disappointed is that the guys at Motorola and the AT&T are just pumping and loading up the Atrix device with some amount of bloat-ware.

  • So as far the apps go’s well friends a handful of AT&T apps, Vlingo, Blockbuster and a bunch of programs which all are shipped on the handset just do not have the delete option – well, not all of them as a few apps can be deleted

  • The bad part is that some of this apps just keep on coming with notifications and they’re killing you.

  • Okay so the Motorola and AT&T guys did messed up badly some things : they just locked down the Atrix version in a difficile way that not only it prevents you from flashing the device with some custom ROM and here it come the super bad part the beloved friends at Motorola did make sure that users will not able to install apps via the email or on the SD card.

  • The Moto embellishments, keypad dialer ( super call making ) plus tech Mobile Hotspot feature are great so well done Moto.

  • The downloads speeds are not amazing on 4G HSPA+ but if you’re nearby a WiFi hotspot, then you’ll be OK.

  • I’m not a fan of the Motoblur widgets, but I was amazed the Android widgets are doing their job properly.

  • Well, the great difference is its ability to function as a full blown computer, if you use the dock accessories and this is the part I enjoy.

  • Motorola Atrix 4G Web Top’s Accessories and Features
  • I will come maybe as a surprise that the Atrix 4G is quite complex and the accessories are impressive, and the part that I really enjoyed is the fact that the Atrix 4G turns itself into a complete PC because of one of the docks which Motorola offers.

  • The first cool thing is the software.

  • The Motorola guys named it Web Top (an instant-on custom Linux build).

  • You just toss the Atrix 4G into the laptop or desktop dock and you’re good to go.

  • Now you can fire up the strange environment, now you are in front of a window representative of your phone (the fact is that you are really on your phone into a window)

  • Along the Web Top software and is mostly just an instance of Firefox.

  • In the environment that Motorola provides for us the ability to call and receive calls, while using the Atrix 4G software.

  • The separate Atrix 4G apps can be run just in their own window, they can be scaled or fit in to a larger window and they just zoom in (not so great).

  • With the help of the Web Top who provides the environment with Growl-like notifications just for things like new emails, phone notifications plus the status bar that can jump to notification window on the Atrix 4G.

  • Well here is the part I do not really enjoy the Firefox side, I was disappointed to discover that this browser is quite slow and it just don’t not stand up next to the good performance that the modern netbooks or the cheaper laptops.

  • Yes you can run Flash but trust me is not so good stuff example the Hulu was an barely watchable experience (and it was at the lowest bit-rate setting).

  • Do not wish for the video for audio streaming (even WiFi).

  • Not all of the software story is not pleasant in the Web Top weird environment.

  • Okay so the experience is quite slow and a little bit of disappointing, but basically driving this Motorola technology is a good deal.

  • I did love the idea but I was not so happy about the execution leaves.

  • So I got to give the credits to Motorola for the looks on the gadgets.

  • Is cool that this extra thin vessel ho was designed for the Atrix 4G it matches the Dell and Apple (to picture just think MacBook Air or Adamo)

  • let me tell you about the dock, is made out of black brushed metal and soft plastic, well another cool feature we need to give credit to Motorola is that this is thinner than almost every laptop ore net-book available now on the market and it weighs 2.4 pounds.

  • The metal housing is a huge magnet for those fingerprints.

  • On the back there is the solid dock which the Atrix 4G will get into.

  • Go ahead and open the laptop and there it is the 11.5 inch display and is powered by a 1366 x 768 resolution.

  • The keyboard is slick and spacious trackpad with two buttons.

  • In the back is the power jack and two USB ports too.

  • In the front there is a small battery display and is activated by smaller buttons (as the MacBook Pro).

  • If the Atrix 4G is not plugged in then the laptop will not work.

  • When the Atrix 4G is plugged into the laptop then the Webtop OS pops up immediately, and ti will very look like the Ubuntu.

  • This dock works like a laptop and it can be used as a charger, too.

  • The guys at the company declared that is expected from the battery to last till eight and ten hours, I made the tests and well is true and really impressive.

  • Not so good when it comes to the laptop dock, the design is great and the solidly to but wen in use well the hole experience was quite frustrating.

  • Let’s put aside my complaints about this Web Top, this laptop dock makes some major issues of its own.

  • The first thing is that the trackpad is for single touch only.

  • This meaning that the navigation is quite bad and not to forget you are forced to grab the scroll manually and move through pages.

  • Not so great on the “web as app”

  • The buttons are a little bit stiff and I found ourselves missing presses on a regular basis.

  • I guess i wished to love this dock, but well the Motorola guys are asking to much wen it comes to the price.

  • I will prefer to spend this cash on a decent netbook or tablet.

  • The HD Desktop Dock
  • Motorola provides beside this laptop dock, a option for home and desktop entertainment setups via its HD dock

  • This HD dock is made by small slab of plastic and equipped with tree USB ports and around the back there is a HDMI jack.

  • Exactly like the laptop dock when place the Atrix 4G into the HD deck it jump to : Entertainment Center or Web Top.

  • If you need an desktop PC then i suggest not to be so happy of what the Web top offers.

  • Motorola did come up with a new and cool way to access music, video and images, but once again a little trouble wen i say that the to navigate your content seems to be hit or miss.

  • Is not so good on the distance to because I tried to get the dock 5 feet far from were I was and sometimes it non-function well when scrolling through menus and making selections.

  • Some issues happened with the playback but I really enjoy the very slick and clean interface that the Motorola guys came up with especially wen it comes to the music, videos and pictures.

  • Some M4V files did worked, not to be happy yet some did not work.

  • I really do not see a future for this dock on the market.

  • There is a better way I suggest in order to connected with the TV screen and I suggest you just easily plug an HDMI cable in to the Atrix 4G and it will provide the same options that the dock brings on the table.

  • The Data
  • So the Motorola and the AT&T are making the bills for the Atrix 4G as a 4G device.

  • Well it got the term in the name of the device, I will gladly report that this is a 4G-like speeds phone but friends is quite the opposite.

  • I tested other handsets and the Atrix got lower speed on downstream and not to happy with the result for the upstream tests.

  • The results were average the download speed went about 1.5 Mbps and the uploads wore much worse about 0.15 Mbps.

  • I did see the download speed get up to 2.2Mbps.

  • Doing the test I saw that the Atrix device had the for and even five bars and displaying the HSPA+ icon.

  • I’m not so sure the problem is in data, but I’m do not see the resembling 4G on these tests.

  • Well what can we say if the guys at AT&T are hoping to impress with the speed on the HSPA plus the network, well I guess they still have some work to do.

  • The Wrap-up
  • I got to say the Atrix 4G might be one of the most favorite Android I tested.

  • I’m not saying that the device doesn’t have some issues, but not to forget the powerhouse and the sleek package.

  • So I say yes and double yes to the Atrix 4G device

  • The question is the accessories, and i just need to say that I’m not quite fond of them well neither do you, I suppose.

  • I personally enjoyed the laptop dock but is again a little hard to get warm up to these devices when they don’t really deliver on the experience you’re paying for.

  • So let me know what you think about this new device broth to us by Motorola enjoy.
