Iriver P7 8GB / 16GB Review

01.06.2009

The Iriver P7 is a great looking device that features music, movies, photos and radio. You can buy the 8GB model for about $170, but the low price can only compensate some of the flaws that this device has. Some problems with the video formats it supports and the slow response of the touch screen at some points keep this player from being a really great player.

The Iriver P7 comes in two models: the 8GB model that you can buy for about $170 and the 16GB model that you can buy for around $200. The design in somewhat similar to that of the Iriver SPINN, with an aluminum look that a lot of you will enjoy. Another thing that most of you will like is the 4.3 inch screen that spreads across the front side of the player, making the P7 ideal for video fans.

The Design

The P7’s dimensions are 4.5 inches across, 3 inches tall and 0.5 inch thick. On the front of the device you will find the 4.3 inch touch screen that was mentioned above. You will use this touchscreen to operate the device almost entirely, but there are some small buttons for power, menu and volume on the top of the device. The headphone jack, the microSD slot and the hold switch on the right side. This is a good, spacious way of arranging the buttons but it’s not much of a hard work considering that 90% of the operating will be done by using the touchscreen

The interface is something different than you might be used to. Each function is displayed on a single screen, making the browsing a little different and requiring some time to get used to it. It is a nice addition although it is not better than regular menus. In addition, scrolling through your collection using the scroll bar does not go as smooth as you would expect.

The Features

As stated earlier, the 4.3 screen and the good number of supported formats (AVI, MP4, WMV, MPG, FLV, XVID, H.264) should make the Iriver P7 an ideal device for video playback. Unfortunately, you will have to use the included software to convert videos. The device lacks the flexibility offered by other devices in its price range and targeted market. On the other hand, if you have the patience to convert your video files, the Iriver P7 is quite good in video quality, given its 480×272 resolution.

As stated earlier, browsing through your collection is a difficult task, but this should not undermine the audio capabilities of the P7. With support for MP3, WMA, FLAC, WAV, and OGG file formats, album artwork and lyrics support and the ability to sort your music based on the ID3 tags or the way you placed music into folders, the P7 manages to provide a good experience. Unfortunately, the P7 does not support AAC files.

The photo viewer works a little too slow, with quite a lag when transitioning between photos, and the navigation is as difficult as with the audio collection. While the ability to record voice memos on the device, the sound quality is bad (like with most MP3 players that offer this option) and there is no graphical information regarding the intensity of the sound recorded by the player. You will not know if you are talking too loud or too soft while you are recording.

The Performance

The battery will keep the player working for 35 hours of audio playback and 7 hours of video playback. This is decent at least for a player in its price range.

Although the video quality is good, you might some problems with the viewing angle, but nothing too severe. Audio quality is only above average, but the ability to enhance it using the EQ or SRS settings is something a large number of people will enjoy.

Although the flaws presented so far are not that bad, and you might get used to the scrolling, with the viewing angles, etc, you will not get used to the included software. The Iriver Plus 3 software will cause great problems while transferring media on your player and it is highly probable you will opt to drag and drop your media on the player.

The application that will convert your movies runs decent, but there will still me minor things that will bother you. Given the fact that you must use it to convert the movies on the devices parameters, you will get past these problems.

Overall, the Iriver P7 is a decent device. Despite the problems you will encounter, the Iriver still packs a great punch, at least considering the quality/price ratio. And you have to admit it looks good. Other alternatives you should consider in this price range are the Cowon O2 and the Archos 605 WiFi, each with their advantages and disadvantages.
