It’s now possible to unlock and relock bootloader on Google Nexus 10

As you might know, two of Google’s most anticipated devices have been launched earlier this week on Google Play. I’m talking about Google Nexus 4 and the controversial tablet Google Nexus 10. These two little wonders have been sold out in less than a few hours after going on sale, even if they have a spicy price: Nexus 4 starts from €299 and Nexus 10 from €399.

Today we are going to focus our attention on Google’s Nexus 10, due to the fact that is one of my favorite Android tablets. This device was first announced on October 29 and since then Android lovers haven’t stopped talking about it. There were lots of rumors regarding Nexus’s specifications, but today we are able to provide you some official information.

It looks like the 10-inch tablet comes equipped with a dual-core ARM Cortex A15 processor, 2GB of RAM and advanced MIMO WiFi technology that makes the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean experience even more attractive. Even if it has an ultra-thin display this little thing supports a resolution of 2560-1600 (300ppi) which means that watching and creating full HD movies will be on a regular basis.
It’s amazing to see a device, that has only 8.9 mm thickness and 603g and still support 16/32 GB of memory. All these combined makes from Google Nexus 10 a “lethal weapon” for Android lovers.
Enough with this technical information and let’s step to serious “hacking” opportunities.

In the guide below I’m going to show you how to unlock/re-lock your Nexus 10’s bootloader, so that you could install your favorite custom ROMs and applications in the near future.

Requirements and warnings
  • The first thing you should do when you are about to act as an Android developer is to do a full backup of your personal data. Check out this guide on how to do it.

  • These procedures require a lot amount of power and that’s why your Nexus 10 should be charged properly – 50% at least.

  • Make sure you have a compatible USB cable for your tablet and that its USB drivers are successfully installed.

  • Make sure the “USB debugging” option is Enabled. Go to Settings> Developer options > USB debugging. If you don’t find the “Developer options” tab anymore, just follow the next guide on how to bring it back.

How to unlock the Nexus 10 bootloader
  1. Download and install the Android SDK kit from here.

  2. Download the Fastboot tool from here.

  3. Extract the “.zip” file into a new folder on your computer. You could rename it “fastboot” or leave it as it is.

  4. Power off your Google Nexus 10 tablet.

  5. Enter your device into Fastboot mode by pressing and holding down the next keys: Volume Up > Volume Down > Power.

  6. Connect your device to a Windows PC via a compatible USB cable.

  7. Open the folder created at step 3.

  8. Inside this folder you have to press these keys: Ctrl + Shift + Right-Click. Now select the “Open command window here” option.

  9. Once the Command prompt window opens, just type the following command and press “Enter”:

  10. fastboot device

  11. Your Nexus 10 personal ID should be displayed in the window.

  12. Now type the following command and press “Enter”:

  13. fastboot oem unlock

  14. Now you should receive a message on your device, asking you if you really want to unlock the bootloader. Hit “Yes”.

  15. Wait for the unlocking process to complete. After the first reboot you will have to set your device up once again, giving the fact that all data has been removed.

  16. Restore your personal data and you are done.

Congratulations!!! Now that your Google Nexus 10 tablet has been unlocked, you are eligible for a rooting procedure. As you might know, having root access on your device gives you the possibility to install any custom ROM you like, so what are you waiting for?

How to relock the Nexus 10 bootloader

In case you need to relock the bootloader on your Google Nexus 10 for any reason (warranty for example), just follow these simple instructions:

  1. Follow all the above steps until Step 10.

  2. Now instead of tying the “fastboot oem unlock” you have to use the following command: fastboot oem unlock

  3. Confirm the unlocking process once again.

  4. Wait for your tablet to reboot.
