Apple Maps Description Changed, Is No Longer “The Most Powerful Mapping Service Ever”

The Cupertino-based company was intensely criticized for launching an Apple Maps application that is not nearly as good as the Google Maps alternative used in iOS until now. Many users have expressed their discontent regarding the Apple Maps and yesterday, the company’s CEO, Tim Cook, has released statement apologizing about the faulty application.

He said that the Apple Maps app is under development, that 100 million people are already using it, that half a billion searches were made, but he recommended the iOS 6 users to go for apps like Bing, Waze, MapQuest or the Google Maps and Nokia Maps webstites until the Maps application in iOS 6 will be good enough.

After Tim Cook’s apology letter, Apple has created a special category in the iTunes Store, centered on navigation applications.

For the time being the category is only displayed in App Store USA, it includes some not-so-interesting apps, but some of them are free, so the users won’t have to pay to use them. The third party apps are not as good as Navigon, iGO, or the old Google Maps.

Besides creating a special section in the App Store, the makers of the iPhone have also changed the Apple Maps description.

If until yesterday iOS 6 Maps was described as “the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever,” Apple says now that maps are presented “in a beautiful vector-based interface that scales and zooms with ease.”

This change is as normal as it should be, considering that Apple has officially acknowledged the flaws of its mapping service and it’s nice to see a company this big to admit it was wrong.

It’s also true that Apple should be careful not to repeat this mistake, but tech giants admitting they were wrong is not something you see everyday, and we all hope that this blunder will be a lesson to them and help the company make better products.
