IFA 2012: Samsung Announced Windows 8-powered ATIV Tab, ATIV Smart PC and ATIV Smart PC Pro

IFA 2012: Samsung Announced Windows 8-powered ATIV Tab, ATIV Smart PC and ATIV Smart PC Pro

Besides the ATIV S smartphone running on Windows Phone 8, Samsung launched yesterday, under the wing of the same brand, a line-up of three tablet PCs that will be running on Microsoft’s Windows 8. Even though the form-factor is reminding of the Asus Transformer series, Samsung is hoping that Microsoft’s platform will be the one making its devices popular.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC and its bigger brother ATIV Smart PC Pro will be two 11.6-inch notebook / tablet hybrids based on Intel processors and running Windows 8 Pro.

Both Samsung ATIV Smart PC and Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro will pack a dock-in keyboard and they will be compatible with the S-Pen, the stylus Samsung used, so far, for its tablets and smartphones of the Note series.

The similarities between the two new Windows 8 products are stopping here, though. Samsung ATIV Smart PC will use an Intel Atom CPU, while ATIV Smart PC Pro will be underpinned by an Intel Core i5 unit, a lot more powerful than the Atom. Regarding the RAM capacity, Smart PC will come with 2 GB of RAM, while the Pro model will be equipped with 4 GB of RAM.

Moreover, ATIV Smart PC will be only 9.9 mm thick, wile the more powerful ATIV Smart PC Pro will be 2 mm thicker.

The battery life of the two devices is also different, but this will probably won’t matter for too many of the customers. As you probably expected Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro will drain its battery faster than Smart PC, there fore the Intel i5 model will have a battery life of 8.5 hours, while the Atom-powered device will stay awake for up to 13.5 hours.

Besides the two above mentioned Windows 8 hybrids, Samsung also announced the ATIV Tab: a 10.1-inch tablet with a processor build on ARM architecture, running on Windows RT.

Samsung ATIV Tab will be equipped with a dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 and 2 GB of RAM, plus the 10.1-inch display with 1,366 x 768 pixels. Regarding the sizes of the Windows 8 RT Samsung slate, it is be only 9.9 mm thick and it weighs in 570 grams.

Unlike the two ATIV devices using Intel chipsets, Smart PC and Smart PC Pro, ATIV Tab doesn’t come with support for the S-Pen stylus.

Samsung hasn’t announced the pricing nor the release date of the three devices, but they should become available for purchase soon after Microsoft officially launches the final version of Windows 8.
