IFA Berlin 2012: Sony Xperia Tablet S Unveiled

The Sony CEO was first one to present a new Sony product at IFA Berlin 2012 trade show. The device that broke the ice was Sony Xperia Tablet S.

The first thing that stroke me as unusual was that now the Sony tablets are also a part from the Xperia brand. On the other hand, in terms of design, the Japan-based company chose to stay in the design lines introduced last year by Sony Tablet S.

In terms of technical specifications, Sony have aligned their tablet with the quad-core trend of the Android manufacturers.

Sony Xperia Tablet S comes with a 9.4-inch IPS display with 1,280 x 800 pixels and packs a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, most likely clocked at 1.3 GHz. The tablet comes pre-loaded with Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich and it will be available in three internal storage versions: 16, 32 and 64 GB.

As you probably guessed Xperia Tablet S has all the connectivity likes of a modern gadget: 3G + WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, SD card slot and 3.5 mm audio jack. The tablet also comes with an 8 megapixel primary camera and a front-facing 1 megapixel sensor.

The 6,000 mAh battery promises an autonomy of up to 10 hours of web browsing or up to 12 hours or video playback.

Anyway, we must see the Sony Xperia Tablet S at work before jumping into conclusions. It will be a direct rival for Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, both quad-core tablets running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The main difference between the Sony and the Samsung slates are the camera, design, display size (9.4 vs 10.1 inches). Then it comes the price, as Sony is known for selling not-so-affordable products.
