Kindle Fire 2 Release Date Is August 7th, Says Amazon Supply Chain Insider

China Times writes that the next-gen Amazon Kindle Fire tablet release date was set for August 7th, instead of July 31st, how other earlier rumors said.

The Kindle Fire 2 will have a 7-inch display and it will be a direct competitor for the Google Nexus 7 and the alleged 7.85-inch iPad Mini.

According to the Chinese journalists, Amazon have ditched the project of the 8.9 and 10.1-inch tablets.

Quoting sources close to the matter, China Times writes that Amazon and the Taiwan-based company Catcher Technology have already begun the production of the new tablet. Two million Kindle Fire 2 tablets will be produced in the first wave.

The main strength of the Kindle Fire 2 tablet will be the price, as the Amazon gadget will have half the price of iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab. Currently, Kindle Fire has a price of only $199.

For 2013, Amazon is planning a price cut off of up to $50, with the Kindle Fire price dropping to $149. Amazon forecasts that 30-40 million Kindle Fire tablets will be shipped in 2012.

Back in November 2011, when Amazon introduced their first tablet, few have though that Kindle Fire will become an instant sales hit. But the price of only $199 was the main reason that determined the consumers to get their hands on the dual-core Android 2.3 Gingerbread-powered tablet.

Google spotted that the 7-inch tablet segment is a great opportunity for them to penetrate the market. Therefore the Mountain View-based company teamed-up with ASUS and developed a quad-core tablet running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, that costs only $199.

Apple is afraid that even though their tablets have 9.7-inch displays the Nexus 7 tablet might bite a big chunk of their market share. Therefore, reports indicate that the Cupertino-based company is working on a 7.85-inch iPad Mini, set to fight against the cheaper Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire 2. Rumor has it that the iPad Mini will have a price starting at $300.
