Rovio’s Angry Birds Generates $106M In Revenue, Has 648M Downloads

The smartphone market is constantly growing since 2009 and the analysts estimate that this market segment will continue to grow over the next years. The gaming segment is currently dominated by Rovio and their Angry Birds franchise, an idea that propelled the little Finnish company right to the top, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Rovio would overtake Nokia’s market value.

All Rovio needs is two or three more successful games and they will be able to accomplish this goal, too. I am joking, of course, but if Nokia continues to drop and Rovio develops a few more highly appreciated games, they will soon get close to the Finalnd-based phone market value.

For the first time in history Rovio have officially unveiled their financial results. Thus, we’ve learned that, in 2011, Rovio had a turnover of $106.3 million, with earnings before tax at $67.6 million.

Rovio’s official press statement also revealed that the Angry Birds series currently has 200 million users and that all the titles of the franchised we downloaded more than 640 million times. To make a comparison, in 2010 Rovio’s Angry Birds had a little over 40 million users and helped the Finland-based company earn $10 million.

As you probably know Angry Birds debuted in App Store for the iOS-powered devices in December 2009. At the beginning of 2011 Rovio had 28 employees, but, as we speak, 224 people are working to support and further develop the Angry Birds franchise.

Angry Birds Space is the latest version of the world’s most popular “mobile game.” As its name suggests the action is deployed in space and the game can be downloaded for iPad, iPhone and iPod, as well as on all the Android-powered devices.

Rovio and their Angry Birds are the living proof that a brilliant idea, implemented into a simple game, easy to install and developed for all mobile platforms from iOS and Android to Series 40 from Nokia can become a real sales hit. Not long ago the Finnish company created a way of allowing to play Angry Birds on any website, even on your Facebook Timeline, using Share & Play feature.
