Microsoft Planning Kinect Support For Windows Phone 8?

Rumor has it that Microsoft is planning to introduce Kincet support on Windows Phone 8, a technology which will allow the users to control their smartphone and tablets without having to touch them.

The technology is based on transforming the front camera into a sensor capable of reading user gestures, just like Kinect does on Xbox 360.

Once the technology is implemented in the new gadgets and software running on Windows, it will allow the users to control applications like a real hands-free, writes Vr-zone. As you probably know Google is working on a similar technology for their devices.

Microsoft will have to get some things done before offering Kinect support on Windows Phone 8. First up, Kinect has three cameras it uses to detect movement and one of them is an infra red camera. Microsoft’s main problem is the lack of room inside a smartphone. As you probably noticed,  the smartphones are getting slimmer lately, so placing an infrared camera inside one would be a though job and without an IR camera the Kinect won’t work during night or in dark places.

While Microsoft and Google are just working on touch-less devices, Pantech, a South Korean company, already launched the first smartphone using a similar technology.

Vega LTE smartphone allows the users to perform a wide range of actions without touching the display or pressing any buttons. Vega LTE uses a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera to transform gestures into commands.

The smartphone has a dual-core 1.5 GHz chipset, 1 GB of RAM, 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 1,280 x 800, 16 GB of internal flash storage, 4G LTE support, 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with support for 1080p full HD video recording, while being only 9.35 mm thick.

Vega LTE has a 1,860 mAh and is running on Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. The smartphone is available exclusively in South Korea, but the company announced they are planning to make it available on other markets, as soon as it will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
