Windows Phone Marketplace Reached 80,000 Applications

Widows Phone is growing each month and so does its application store which now reached the 80,000 app milestone. It’s a decent figure considering that Microsoft’s mobile operating system debuted in late 2010, and now, less than one and a half years later it has 80,000 apps in Marketplace.

Studies show that about 340 new applications are added each day in Windows Phone Marketplace. On the other hand the applications in WP7 Marketplace aren’t available in all countries. For example, in USA over 69,000 applications are available for download.

Even so Windows Phone Marketplace is still behind the competition: Apple Store has over 600,000 applications, Google Play has about 500,000 apps, while Nokia store already reached the 100,000 threshold.

Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710, the first Windows Phone smartphones in Nokia line-up, already hit the market, while Nokia Lumia 900, another WP-powered device is highly-anticipated. Lumia 900 comes with a 4.3-inch AMOLED display and design and specifiactions similar to those of Lumia 800.

According to an article in The New York Times, the Redmond-based company have started to “write checks” for the app developers, in order to attract them to their mobile platform and help Windows Phone Marketplace catch up with Google Play or App Store.

Many of the developers don’t want to invest time and money in an app dedicated to Windows Phone, especially for the small number of users, compared to iOS or Android. Thus, Microsoft decided to pay the devs in order to motivate them to create applications already popular among the users of the platforms designed by Google and Apple.

The same source also speaks about applications dedicated to websites like Foursquare and those of the Cheezburger network. They also say that Microsoft pays all these companies to develop applications for Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating system.

A few days ago Windows Phone Marketplace was made available in over 13 countries. Microsoft’s application store will allow the users of the 13 countries that received Marketplace support access to a selection of over 50,000 applications, like Facebook, Angry Birds, Adobe Reader, Fruit Ninja or Splinter Cell.
