Apple Reportedly Working On 7.85-inch Tablet, Alleged iPad Mini

Rumor has it that Apple is planning to widen their iPad line-up by adding a model that features a smaller display, developed for the low-end segment and for those who want the iOS experience on a smaller version of the iPad tablet.

Apparently, the small iPad will be based on iPad 2 and not on the new iPad how previous rumors indicating. Sources say that Apple’s small tablet is as tall as the iPad 2 is wide. Moreover the 7.85-inch iPad, unofficially dubbed iPad Mini, will be powered by iPad’s dual-core A5 chipset.

The screen resolution will stay the same, 1,024 x 768 pixels, but because the iPad Mini has a 7.85-inch display, the pictures, videos and anything that appears on the screen will better than on iPad 2. Still the pixel densitiy of 163 ppi is nowhere near the one of the new iPad’s Retina display, still, the improvement should be noticeable.

Even though Apple is working on a smaller iOS-based tablet, no one can guarantee that iPad Mini will ever see the light of day, as the Cupertino-based company have previously rejected such a product.

Meanwhile, Steve Jobs is no longer at the wheel of Apple, and the new board seems more attracted to making profit than conserving the mystic public opinion created around Apple products, so anything is possible now.

Analysts estimate that by 2016 the tablet market will be dominated by low-end tablets, and the success of Amazon’s Kindle Fire which is available for a mere $200 shows this can be possible. Rumor has it that Google also wants to attack the cheap tablets segment, as the search engine giant prepares a 7-inch quad-core tablet, unofficially dubbed Nexus Tablet, which will go on sale at $149.

Maybe Apple officials felt the threat of both Amazon Kindle Fire and the yet unannounced Google Tablet, so they decided that a low-end iPad will help them stay up front on a market where the company already lost of big chunk of the market share pie.
