Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich Update For Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus Now Available For Download

In a difficult moment, when the lack of updates is frustrating the customers, out of nowhere, Google have launched the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich firmware update. We told you yesterday that the Motorola Xoom WiFi users have received the Android 4.0.4 ICS OTA update. Nexus S (UMTS/GSM) followed, then at midnight Galaxy Nexus (HSDPA+) was also included on the list of devices that will receive the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Motorola Xoom WiFi, a tablet launched in May 2011, have received the Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich update earlier this year, in January. About two months later, Android 4.0.4 have been made available for Motorola Xoom. Although Google officials have announced that the Motorola devices won’t be privileged, the Motorola Xoom WiFi was nicknamed “Nexus Tablet” by the Android community because of the frequency of the updates released for this device.

Google Nexus S (GSM model) users have been able to upgrade their devices to Ice Cream Sandwich version 4.0.3 in December 2011. Well, most of them, because Google have stopped the updates because of the large number of issues that were seriously affecting the device’s performance. The biggest problem reported was the battery life which was reduced to half after the update was applied.

The list of firmware updates Galaxy Nexus received since it was launched in November 2011 is very short, unlike the list of issues. GNex was a device affected by various issues. May of them were fixed once the Android 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 updates have been released in January 2012. Anyway, many of the bugs are still there, but some rumors were saying that all of them will be fixed by Android 4.0.5 ICS scheduled for April 2012.

On the other hand Google announced they will not roll out the update for the 4G versions of the aforementioned devices. The owners are angry about Google’s decision because they weren’t informed over the disadvantages of the 4G versions when they purchased the terminals.

The Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update brings improved system stability, better camera performance, faster autorotation and improved phone number recognition. These are more a list of fixed issues than a list of new features. The Nexus S users that received the update have reported the improvements of the new firmware update: no lag when hitting the Menu button, the camera is opened faster, especially from lockscreen, improved battery life, the applications and the OS as a whole is a lot faster.

The Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update also improved the navigation features, which received a new interface after the update. The list of goodies includes: maps have been optimized for high-resolution displays, a new priority option in transit mode and a route option for public transportation
