Microsoft Raises Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh Multitasking Applications Limit To 8

The next update for Microsoft’s mobile operating system was unofficially dubbed as Windows Phone Tango, but a few days ago an official of the Redmond-based provided new details regarding the official name of the OS. Stefania Duico, Microsoft’s Windows Phone Business Group Lead in Italy, said that the new WP7 version will be officially called Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh.

You probably know that the official name of Windows Phone Mango is Windows Phone 7.5, and because Tango doesn’t come with any major updates, Microsoft decided to only add the “Refresh” particle. We don’t know exactly when it will arrive on Windows Phone 7 devices, but rumor has it that it will come “sometime this year.”

When Windows Phone Tango (Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh) details were announced at Mobile World Congress 2012, everyone looked at them in a shallow way: it’s a Windows Phone version with lower system requirements, for low-end devices with less RAM.

For the time being the details about Windows Phone Tango are vague, but the enthusiasts have begun searching the answered themselves. On XDA Developers forum there’s a thread dedicated to Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh, which mentions that the mobile operating system comes with multitasking and that the applications limit have been increased to 8 (Windows Phone Mango is currently limited to 5 apps).

From the same forum we’ve learned that beginning with Windows Phone Tango the MMS notifications will be included in Messaging Hub (where the SMS and Facebook messages are gathered). Anyway, is there anybody out there still using MMS when you can easily send attachments via email?

Meanwhile some Chinese web publications have posted pictures of invitations Microsoft sent for an upcoming event scheduled for March 21st. The invitations read “a whole new Windows Phone 7.5 have been created.” The focal point of the Microsoft event will be the launch of Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh update, developed for low cost terminals.

Anyway, the most anticipated version of Windows Phone is Apollo, more precisely Windows 8 for smartphones. This is the milestone that will say whether Microsoft can fight side-by-side against Android and iOS or they are doomed to an insignificant market share.
