Non-A5 Devices Running On iOS 5.1 Can Be Tethered Jailbreaked Using Redsn0w

Apple has just released iOS 5.1, and many users are wondering if they can already jailbreak it. The answer is “yes” for some folks, while the answer is “no” for the rest. According to MuscleNerd, iOS 5.1 can be tethered jailbreaked using the latest version of Redsn0w. The catch is that Redsn0w will only work with non-Apple A5 gadgets.

This version of Redsn0w is based on the limera1n exploit “developed” by GeoHot who quit the hacking jobs for quite some time following an agreement with Sony. Anyway, if you download Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 now, then you will be able to jailbreak all devices running on iOS 5.1 and which are powered by Apple’s A4 processor or lower.

It’s a big “sorry” for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S users, but the iPhone Dev Team is certainly working around the clock to bring a jailbreak tool to you as soon as possible. This means that only iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, original iPad, iPod Touch 4G, and iPod Touch 3G users can jailbreak their devices.

If you want to do the job, then you can download RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 for Mac OS X here, and for Windows PCs here. In order to jailbreak non-A5 devices, use the “Just Boot” feature each time you boot your device because you will lose your jailbreak and your jailbreak apps will not work.

iPhone users who unlocked their smartphones using Ultrasn0w shouldn’t upgrade to iOS 5.1 using iTunes. Make sure that you’re using custom IPSW before upgrading to the new operating system because if you will restore to a stock IPSW, then you will lose your carrier unlock forever. You can always use the so-called Custom IPSW button found in Redsn0w.

If you save an older bootrom for the iPhone 3GS, then the iOS 5.1 jailbreak is untethered. One more thing that is worth mentioning is the fact that iBooks doesn’t work and you’re going to have to wait for a Redsn0w update. Let us know if you’ve jailbreaked your device and if everything went as intended!
