7-inch iPad Mini Release Date Is Q3 2012, Suggests Samsung Securities Document

An official document from Samsung Securities has been leaked on the web, and although we shouldn’t make a big deal out of it, the document states that Apple will release a 7-inch mini iPad in the third quarter of 2012. The leaked doc specifies that Apple is going to launch the iPad 3 in the first quarter of 2012, while in Q3 2012 it will launch the so-called iPad mini.

There are several important data mentioned in the Samsung Securities document as Apple is looking to sell about 100 million iPads this year thanks to the higher-resolution IPS display found in the iPad 3. The leaked doc suggests that Apple is in talks with Samsung in order to bring flexible and standard AMOLED displays to the iOS lineup.

Apple is looking to bring AMOLED touchscreens to the iPhone and the iPad once the South Korean company will be capable of manufacturing enough units for the aforementioned products. Samsung can only manufacture 54 million AMOLED panels for tablets, however, it’s going open a new factory later this year in order to mass produce flexible AMOLED displays.

The Cupertino-based company would have loved to offer AMOLED touchscreens to its fans, but the report says that Samsung cannot keep up with the demands therefore it will stick with IPS LCD technology for the time being.

The iPhone 4S Retina Display manufacturing costs stand at $39, while the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display for the Samsung Galaxy S II costs about $50. If the Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen for the newly unveiled Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 costs up to $170, then a 9.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display for the iPad would cost up to $260, price which isn’t feasible for the moment.

Samsung believes that it will be able to reach 168 million OLED-based displays shipped by the end of 2012. According to the document, Samsung shipped 38 million such displays in 2010, and 83 million in 2011. It appears that Samsung Mobile Display is doing very well, and if the company will open a new factory then it’s going to hit the jackpot as companies will rush to strike a deal for Super AMOLED Plus displays.

The iPad 3 announcement event will take place on March 7th at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. The iOS tablet is expected to feature a 9.7-inch Retina Display at 2,048 x 1,536 resolution among others. If the document is accurate, then the 7-inch  iPad mini will most likely be revealed at the usual iPod Event in September.
