How To Remove The Desktop Watermark, Confidential Text, And Hash In Windows 8

Hi guys. For all Windows 8 users I have good news. And when I say Windows 8, I mean to the developers. You already know that the development build that been leaked before the official beta (Windows 8 M1 Build 7850, Windows 8 M2 Build 7955 and also Windows 8 M3 Build 7959) have more watermarks on the desktop. For the only testing version you will also find a hash code and a Microsoft Confidential statement. If you want to learn how to clean your desktop from these things, and if you want to easy work, read the following article and then you will be able remove all watermarks.

To remove all watermarks you must use a tool named Universal Text Remover. Here are the main steps for how to remove the watermarks from your Windows 8 desktop:

  1. First, you must to download the Universal Text Remover tool. You can download the Automatic 7850/7955 version from here and the Manual 7959 version from here.

  2. Next, you must to run the app as an administrator. The app works on Windows 8 M2 / M3.

  3. Now, you must to copy the following file: %WinDir%System32shell32.dll. You must to copy to another folder location for editing.

  4. Next, you must to start a HEX Editor and then you must to open the copied shell32.dll in the HEX editor.

  5. Then, you must to search the following HEX string: 34 00 37 00 38 00 43.

  6. Now, you must to modify the 34 number in the HEX code with 35 number.

  7. Then, you must to save the file and you must to grant full control permissions of the following file: %WinDir%System32shell32.dll.

  8. Finally, you must to rename the shell32.dll file to shell32.dll.old and then you must to copy the patched shell32.dll in the following folder: %WinDir%System32.

To delete the other watermarks keep reading. Here are the instructions for how to remove the rest of watermarks:

  1. First, you must to copy the following file: %WinDir%System32en-USshell32.dll.mui. You must to copy the file to another folder to editing.

  2. Then, you must to run Resources Editor and here you must to open the copied shell32.dll.mui file.

  3. Next, you must to navigate to the string table > 2070 > 1033.

  4. Now, you must to edit the following resource ID:

    • 33107: %wsWindows %ws

    • 33108: %ws Build %ws

    • 33109: Evaluation copy

    • 33110: For testing purposes only

    • 33118: Microsoft Pre-release Windows Operating System

  5. Next, you must to navigate to the String Table > 3876 > 1033 and you must to edit the following resource ID, so that the new string is just a space(” “):

    • 62000 – is the unauthorized use

    • 62001 – is the Microsoft Confidential

  6. Now, you must to save the file and then you must to grant full control permissions of the following file: %WinDir%System32en-USshell32.dll.mui.

  7. Then, you must to rename the shell32.dll.mui file to shell32.dll.mui.old.

  8. Finally, you must to copy the edited shell32.dll.mui file in the following folder: %WinDir%System32en-US.

And that’s all. Now, you will be able to remove the desktop watermark, the confidential text and the hash in Windows 8.
