How To Upgrade Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G To Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread

Everyone got something! More and more we did spot devices who are receiving the latest 2.3.4 Android Gingerbread version, and to be fair it’s time for the Samsung Epic 4G users to get something, too. So this is why we are bringing happy news today. The great news is that the Samsung Epic 4G users can indeed update their phones with not the 2.3.4 version but instead they can benefit from the 2.3.3 Gingerbread version.

The fun part doesn’t end here because there is a whole new set of optimizations which have been done in this 2.3.3 version of Gingerbread for Samsung Epic 4G SPH D700. If you still remember the ED 12, well now is built with EE 03 that it so much better. The previous version didn’t make it so well because the ED 12 was definitely a buggy one and had some many issues with GPS, 4G plus a couple of other apps like the temperature sensor.

If youre wondering if this software update can be used on all of the Samsung Epic 4G which are present worldwide, well the answer is definitely yes. There is something you’ll need to understand very well if updating your phone with this firmware: this here doesn’t mean that you are rooting your phone or voiding the warranty as unless and until you root your phone there is no way that you will lose the warranty not so ever so don’t worry about this matter.

You probably know that most of the smartphones today come along with the Sprint carrier, this will help you to easily proceed and update your phone with the latest 2.3.3 version. If you don’t know yet, there’s only the Gingerbread update 2.3.3 for now. We advise you to keep on visiting our site for future 2.3.4 update for Samsung Epic 4G.

The neat part of this update is that it has been dubbed as the EE 03 version and all other previous version which were buggy. Some time ago we did show you how you can update manually the Samsung Epic 4G to Android 2.2.1 (Froyo).

Let us assure you that this update process will be very easy and soon you will have the latest 2.3.3 version of Gingerbread on your Samsung Epic 4G. Before we proceed please make sure to understand that you need to follow the exact instructions because if you will not, there’s the high probability that you spoil the Samsung Epic 4G or may even brick the device. We will show you the notable changes which have been made in the latest version.

One other issue you’ll need to understand is that, now the file system is of RFS built now but soon in the next built, there will be an EXT 4 type.

If you are not sure that you have a Samsung Epic 4G device please stop.

Improvements in 2.3.3 GINGERBREAD for Samsung Epic 4G D 700:
  1. First thing you’ll need to understand, is that the beloved Android Market Place layout has been changed, looking now more and more as the Nexus S 4G, giving the users the ability to download the protected applications and not to worry your phone will still be identified as the Epic 4G only and not the Nexus S 4G.

  2. The radio lovers will enjoy this: the FM Radio works now, because is a beta built. The good news doesn’t stop here because you will also get the free Netflix application which can be downloaded in the due course of this article.

  3. We didn’t joke when we told you that this update will bring more improvements along, and for Gtalk users there are some good news, too. The 2.3.3 version of Gingerbread that you can now upgrade the Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G is now able to supports the latest Video support in Gtalk, meaning that the Gtalk lovers will be so pleased with this update and it’s results.

  4. If you remember the Carrier IQ, well now in this update it has been removed, though this can be added later using the small add-on as this firmware is the main stock firmware.

  5. The over scroll feature can now be easily be configured and the one new feature is that you can now easily customize the CRT animation for screen off, pretty awesome new features for one update.

  6. A couple of features that I especially enjoyed were that the security settings, WiFi as well as the WiFi tethering features that are working simply perfectly.

  7. You will not believe that WiFi tethering is now capable of powering up to a maximum of 5 WiFi devices.

  8. One bug that we did find is that LED notification. I heard many opinions on this subject, this feature has been reported as worked on some of the phones while some of the users say that this feature is not working in their Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G phones.

  9. Let’s proceed with the overall user interface, that by now has been changed because it can loads much more better and is more fluidic than before.

  10. The over scroll feature, plus the CRT animation for screen off, are now available and they can be enabled by choosing the setting from “Settings > Display”.

  11. The battery is no longer a problem, because the problem was taken cared of in this new update, is been sorted out in this version as the firmware and is now best optimized for the Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G.

Pre Upgrade Instructions:

Before you proceed with the update, is very important to know that you have to synced all your contacts, using your Google Account, all the sms, apps, music and video files that are placed in your Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G phone, we advice you make a backup or there’s the risk of the data to be lost in the process.

One important aspect is that you need to fully understand that anything within SD card will not be lost, so you can alternatively move to SD Card. So if you are indeed planning to move your data in the internal SD Card then it’s preferred to store the data in computer as a backup as in an unlikely event the data in SD Card may get corrupted.

To be 100% safe please make sure to remove the SIM card as well as the external SD cards if any is in your Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G phone, just to be sure that in an unlikely event the data in it doesn’t get corrupted on the way.

Another important piece for this update will be the original USB cable, (you have got with your Galaxy S II GT I9100) so make sure that you have it at close reach.

Very Important to know: Please make sure to have at least 50% of battery life left, this is required to prevent any problems while updating.

Next step it will be to make sure that your PC/laptop runs on one of the following: Vista, Windows 7, OS, XP, after checking the operating system you will need to disable any antivirus or any firewall. Plus you should have admin privileges because it will allow you to download and install the software including the drivers and also along with this you will be requiring the USB port on your computer which supports USB 2.0.

Another important thing to know before we proceed with the update will be to ensure that your phone is Samsung Galaxy S II GT I 9100 and not any other phone.

How to install Gingerbread 2.3.3 on the Samsung Epic 4G:

In order to proceed you will need to download the Gingerbread Upgrade package which contains Odin flash tool and that EC 05 firmware file which is nothing but the 2.3.3 update, CWM 0.2.5 update which is the one click root for your phone for your convenience. After downloading the firmware package you will need to unzip. In the process of unzipping there will be a prompted to enter in the password, the password is: “androidadvices.com”.

All well and good by now, please open the Odin after extracting the files, after this go ahead and switch Off your Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G phone and then you will need to to switch ON in the download mode, please make sure that on the PC the Odin program is still opened.

To do this a little bit faster, long press 1 this will let you enter the download mode in the Samsung Epic 4G after the download mode has been established please press the power button after which you will get a yellow triangle.

So when you see the yellow triangle, simply connect the Samsung Epic 4G with the help of USB to the computer while keeping the Odin open on your PC.

By now you will probably see the ID:COM lamp glowing yellow, that’s good news because it means that the drivers have been installed successfully and you are ready to flash the Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G.

Simply proceed by clicking on the PIT option and select the file “victory_8G_100528.pit”, then you will need to click on the PDA file and select the “SPH-D700-ECO-8gb-AAD”.

Another important thing that you need to understand is that apart from these two files don’t select any other files or else the flashing process won’t be successful. This version of firmware can and will only be applied to the 8 GB versions.

Please make sure that you’ve unchecked everything on the left side of the ODIN window except the for the “Auto Reboot” box. After simply selecting those files, you will have to sit back and wait while the process finishes to get over and then after few minutes of time the device will be rebooted.

After rebooting the Samsung Epic 4G will now be on the latest 2.3.3 Gingerbread version.

A piece of advice will be that after the successful installation of the firmware, you will need to install the Modem for your Samsung Epic 4G because that default version is a little bit buggy.

Start by installing the Modem, this meaning that you will need to switch off the Samsung Epic 4G once again and then you will have to get into the download mode. I did mention above that if you need to enter the download mode in the Samsung Epic 4G just long press 1 after this go ahead and press the power button after which you will get a yellow triangle.

As soon as the yellow triangle will appear, please make sure to connect the Samsung Epic 4G to the PC with the help of USB cable and please make sure that the Odin is still open on the PC.

Now, you must to connect your Samsung Epic 4G with your computer, using the USB cable and also the Odin application. When is successfully connected, you will be able to see the a yellow button. Once again you will be able to notice that the ID:COM lamp glows yellow, meaning that all of the required drivers have been installed successfully. This will give you the ability to finally flash the Samsung Epic 4G device now.

Now follow this exact instructions in order to proceed with the whole process of updating:

  1. Select first of all the PIT option and after go ahead and select the “victory_8G_100528.pit” file.

  2. Now click the PDA file to be able to select the “EC03-modem_AndoroidAdvices” file from that unzipped file.

  3. Another important thing is that on the left side of the window you will need to make sure that you unchecked all except the “AUTO REBOOT” option.

  4. The following process shouldn’t be interrupted because if interrupted you will have to do the procedure right from the start, so please after selecting the files and double checking them to be the same, go ahead and just simply click the Start option to start the initiation of the modem installation process.

  5. The Samsung Epic 4G will probably start to reboot now after which there will be a surprise for you, the firmware is updated successfully with the new stable and speedy modem.

  6. By far you did great because if you did exactly as mentioned above you’ll probably are seeing that the latest firmware along with the latest modem is now available for you on your Samsung Epic 4G device.

  7. Another thing worth mentioning is that you can alternatively root your phone by installing the “CWM3.0.2.5 one-click” app that is available in the package in your Samsung Epic 4G phone.

Install Gtalk Video and FM Radio on your phone if there are any issues

Do you need to install the Gtalk Video and FM Radio?

To be able to do so please start first by copy the apk files of FM Radio as well as the Video Gtalk in your phone and after this you’ll need to simply install the same in the Samsung Epic 4G.

Install CRT Screen Off / Over scroll:

One thing you need to understand clearly that the first thing to do for installing that CRT screen / Over scroll option in your Samsung Epic 4G is to first unzip the file which is named as “CRT_ScreenOverscroll_EE03_AndroidAdvices” to simply get the apk file and the same needs to be installed in your phone.

You did well, because you now did have successfully installed the latest Android 2.3.3 on your Samsung Epic 4G phone and another thing worth mentioning is that since you have updated your firmware all of those APN Settings are definitely be cleared. To be able to simply access all the data services: Internet and MMS we advice to contact your Service provider.

Please make sure to let us know how you did with the process and if there were any issues or problems along the road, we will try to solve them for you. Enjoy!
