How To Increase / Improve / Extend Motorola Xoom Battery Life

Besides Samsung Tab and Apple iPad, Motorola Xoom is one of the tablets that still enjoys popularity among the gadgets¬†enthusiasts. Here, at mobile-review.ws, we quite enjoy the Motorola Xoom tablet, and our friend and¬†college, Razvan Oprescu, got his hands on one of these, and even reviewed it. We were the ones that thought you how to root Motorola Xoom, and now we’d like to share a few tips of how to increase this tablet’s battery life.¬†So whether you have Android 3.0 Honeycomb on your Motorola Xoom or you installed Ubuntu Linux on your tablet, we are sure that you want your¬†Motorola Xoom to last longer. If so, you came to the right place.

As you probably know (or not),¬†Motorola Xoom comes with a Li-Ion battery. At the launch moment, Motorola said that their Xoom tablet is able to face 10h of “hard work,” but when we got our hands on it and messed a little bit with the Android tablet, the battery “died” after 8h of video games and Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, which, in our¬†opinion,¬†is more than enough. But we are sure that Motorola Xoom battery life can be further increased. Here are a few tips that will extend Motorola Xoom battery life.

Motorola Xoom Battery Manager Application

There are lots of battery eaters inside any device, but it seems that there are also some ways of make them drain your device’s battery less. Things work the same with Motorola Xoom, and¬†Battery Manager app will help you improve the battery life.

The Battery Manager app comes as standard with most Motorola devices, and the same thing happens to Motorola Xoom. If you use Battery Mananger you should be able to increase Motorola Xoom battery life. In order to access¬†Motorola Xoom Battery Manager, go to “Main Menu” by pressing the “Menu” button, then go to “Settings” and tap on the “Battery Manger” option. Now, the Battery Manager should open and you will see the three modes of this application:¬†‚ÄúPerformance Mode‚ÄĚ, ‚ÄúSmart Mode‚ÄĚ and the ‚ÄúBattery Saver Mode.‚ÄĚ Let’s have a look and see what each one does

  • Motorola Xoom Battery Manager¬†Performance Mode – This is the default mode for the Battery Manager, of course if you haven’t customized the settings of the tablet. The Performance mode disables data time out and auto brightness features saving battery life, but the performance of your¬†Motorola Xoom is not affected in any way in this mode

  • Motorola Xoom Battery Manager Smart Mode – The Smart mode keeps the data time out and auto brightness functions turned on, allowing you to customize the settings of other battery drainers of¬†Motorola Xoom

  • Motorola Xoom Battery Manager Battery Saver Mode – In this mode, the battery eaters are kept to minimum parameters, which makes the battery life increase. It also allows the user to customize the brightness of the¬†Motorola Xoom display

Smart-Use Motorola Xoom Applications

Since Motorola Xoom runs on Android, it features a multi-tasking function, so every application you use will stay opened until you close them. The background applications eat a lot of battery, reducing Motorola Xoom battery life. So, we recommend you to use the Advanced Task Killer application you can download and install for free from the Android Market. Other applications that drain a lot of your Motorola Xoom, like social networking apps and email clients. You can increase your Motorola Xoom battery life by setting the update frequency of those apps lower, or even to manual updates, for best battery performance.

Turn Off Motorola Xoom Big Battery Eaters

The biggest battery drainers of the new devices are the WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and the 3G. Turning them off should increase the battery life of¬†Motorola Xoom. You can disable the big battery eaters like¬†WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and 3G by going to the “Main Menu,” then go to “Settings” and tap “Wireless & Networks.” Here will be able to change the¬†settings¬†of the 3G network function, which because of the constant search for 3G coverage, eats a lot of battery.

Say No To Live Wallpapers:

The Live Wallpapers function of the Android devices also eats a lot of battery. And because¬†Motorola Xoom is an Android-based device, with a 7-inch display, optimizing the wallpapers of the table will save lots of battery. So, if you want to increase¬†Motorola Xoom battery life, you should use darker wallpapers, and even say no to live wallpapers (I know they look great, but they eat about 19% of the total battery life). Because a light¬†wallpaper means more burned pixels, which use battery to glow, a darker wallpaper will increase the battery life of your¬†Motorola Xoom, mostly because it needs to burn less pixels. By using a darker wallpaper for your¬†Motorola Xoom, you should be able to notice an increase in the device’s battery life, as a dark wallpaper makes the total battery power drain to drop at about 7%. As well, we¬†recommend¬†you to stop using the automatic brightness function and set your display brightness manually, let’s say to a medium.

The Motorola Xoom Power Control Widget

Anther easy way of increasing¬†Motorola Xoom battery life is to use the Power Control¬†widget, which can be installed on most of the Android devices. The Power Control¬†widget helps you control the 5 biggest battery eaters of¬†Motorola Xoom, which are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Sync and Brightness. Keeping the usage of these battery drainers to a minimum, will help you increase¬†Motorola Xoom battery life. To install Power Control¬†widget, go to your¬†Motorola Xoom home screen, tap and hold your finger on any of your homescreens. After about 1 second a window should appear, now tap “Android Widgets,” then chose the widget named “Power Control” by tapping it. Place it on any of your homescreens.

Use AC Charger Instead Of USB Cable

It’s¬†recommended¬†to use the¬†Motorola Xoom AC charger to recharge your battery, instead of using the USB data cable pluged-in to your PC / Laptop. In fact, this is the method the manufacturer¬†recommends for the device, mostly because the USB charging method damages your battery on the long run.

By following the above mentioned tips, you should be able to increase your¬†Motorola Xoom battery life. Anyway, don’t forget to tell us which of the tips worked best for your device in the comments area below. As well, be good and tell us some tricks you know that might increase Motorola Xoom battery life. Take care!
