How To Upgrade / Update Samsung Galaxy 3 i5801 To Android 2.2 Froyo

I have some great news for you, especially if you are the happy owner of the new and shiny Samsung Galaxy 3 I5801. The great news is that the new Froyo 2.2 is ready to roll out and I am here to show you how to manually install the update, in case you are leaving in a region with no OTA compatibility.

Keep in mind that this is the first time you try to update the firmware of your smartphone you have to follow some simple instructions before you go to the actual flashing process. As you probably now by now, the EU firmware ( released in February and named XWJPD ) is well know to have problems such as screen black outs, so we are going to install the Asian version for a smoother update.

This firmware flashing procedure is pretty similar with the one used for the Samsung Galaxy S, but keep in mind that there are many more ways to do this, but we will try to give you the simplest way possible. First off all please follow this instructions:

  1. First of all, please make sure that your device is Samsung Galaxy 3 I5801. Then download the Flash kit for Galaxy 3, unzip, and if it requires a password, don’t forget it’s ‘androidadvices.com’.

  2. DO NOT FORGET to backup your contacts, music, pictures, SMS, videos, etc because the process will erase them all.

  3. It is recommended to have at least 75% remaining battery but to be sure make the update when the battery level is full. Make sure to disable all antivirus programs and firewalls on your computer.

How to update Samsung Galaxy 3 I5801 to Froyo 2.2 firmware:

  1. The first thing you need to do is to unzip Flash Kit for Galaxy 3 I5801 folder, in which you will see three files, the Firmware file ( 5810ZHJPF ), Odin v4.252 and the Galaxy3_0531.ops file.

  2. The best thing to do is to place these three files on your desktop so you can easily access them throughout the process. Then shut down your device and remove the SIM and Memory cards.

  3. Now you have to start your phone in Download Mode. It can be done very easy by pressing Volume Down button and the Home button at the same time. While pressing these two buttons, turn on your device and it will automatically enter the Download Mode.

  4. Go on your desktop and open the ‘Odin v4.252′ application and then connect your device to the computer via USB.

After you connect the device to your computer you will notice that COM Port Mapping in the ‘Odin Multi Downloader’ will turn yellow. If this happens it’s okay because the drivers were installed correctly:

  • Now go to the options menu and make sure that Protect OPS, Auto Reboot and Reset Time features are checked. The One Package field MUST remain unmarked.

  • After this go to Debug Options and un-check the Debug Only option.

  • Now pay attention and select the following files: OPS (  Galaxy3_0531.ops ), Phone ( GALAXY3_FET_REV_00_phone ), PDA ( I5801ZFJPE-REV02-PDA-CL915488.tar.md5 ), CSC ( I5801FETJPD-CSC-FET.tar.md5 ), EFS ( none ), One Package ( none ).

  • After you are sure that you’ve entered the correct options continue by pressing Start and you will notice that the upgrade process will finish in just a few minutes. Please keep in mind that if you remove the USB cable that makes the connection between the device and computer, you have 99% chances to brick it.

  • When the update has finished, your device will reboot and ask again for the initial settings. These is the part when you can safely unplug the USB cable and there you have it, you just finished to upgrade to Froyo 2.2
