How To Update / Upgrade HTC Desire To Android 2.2 Froyo OTA

If you are the owner of the HTC Desire, and especially an unlocked version, you are probably the happiest man on the planet. I think that you already upgraded to Android 2.2 ( Froyo ), but if you didn’t you should really get that going. If you already know when the update will be available, you should really know how to actually upgrade the HTC Desire to Android 2.2, so please follow the steps below.

Before you start find out if an actually upgrade it’s available. You can find out by using two different ways. First is the OTA possibility ( a message will appear on your smartphone reading something like ‘software update available for your phone’.

It’s likely that this OTA update will never show up for your region, so you will have to go into your menu, settings. Now go to the bottom and press ‘About Phone’, and then ‘System Update’, and ‘Check now’.

If the update is not yet available the smartphone will prompt you ‘Your system is currently up to date’ message. If this is the case, then you should go back one, scroll down and go to ‘Android version’ and see if you are on 2.1 or 2.2.

Ok now, unfortunately, by upgrading to Froyo the entire phone memory will be deleted. The great news is that you can set your phone to make a backup to all your messages, contacts, settings, bookmarks, etc. If you don’t know how to do that, check it out now.

Press ‘Menu’, then go to ‘Privacy’ where you should find the box ‘Back up my data & settings’ that you have to tick. After this, the phone takes some time to back up. Keep in mind that one of the great features of Android is that you can sync all your contacts in the cloud from a linked Gmail account.

Now you have to go again to your system update. When available, hit the download button and be sure to do it over WiFi otherwise you’ll get stuck with a pretty large bill. The hole download and installation process will take about 15 minutes to complete. While making the update, the smartphone will reboot several times and restore your personal data and settings.
