How to Remove / Uninstall AOL on Windows XP, Vista, 7

AOL (previously known as America Online) is a global Internet services company that provides its subscribers access to forums, online communities and media content, the client having to pay a membership fee. The users must first install the AOL software on their PCs in order to access the services. The interesting part comes when you want to uninstall the software, because it can be pretty difficult. You can’t just click “Uninstall” like with other programs and applications, it’s a little more complicated than that. But don’t worry, if yo carefully follow the steps bellow, you will be able to completely remove the AOL software and all its traces from your computer.

  1. The first thing you have to do is click the Start button and head to Control Panel.

  2. Next, select ”Add or Remove Software”, and wait a moment for the programs to populate the hard drive.

  3. Now look for the AOL widget and click the Uninstall button near it. In some cases a dialog box might appear asking what you want to do next. Choose Uninstall and click Next.

  4. Follow the instructions given by the uninstall wizard, and reboot your computer if asked to.

  5. Now, go to My Computer and enter your hard drive (usually the C: drive).

  6. Next, get inside the Programs folder and you’ll see a list of folders which should be arranged in alphabetical order. Some uninstalled applications may leave traces behind such as files or empty folders. So, if you spot folders named AOL, AIM, or AOD delete them all.

  7. It’s time to remove the “leftovers” as well. Go the the search engine in the Start menu and search for “aol”(select “All files and Folders”). All files with the name AOL will be displayed. Select and delete all pf them (click one file, CTRL+A, then delete).

  8. Finally, if you desire, you can completely remove the files by emptying the Recycle Bin.
