How to update HTC EVO 4G to Android 3.0 ( HoneyComb )

When Google designed it, Android 3.0 was no place for smartphones. As with every creation that reaches in the “wrong hands” it may end up where it wasn’t supposed to. Yes, you guessed it, we are talking about an XDA member, who has successfully managed to partially homebrew an Android 3.0 build for the HTC EVO 4G. You can manually update to Gingerbread, using our How To below, but watch out for troubles.

And when I meant troubles, I was referring to the fact that by updating the HTC EVO 4G to Gingerbread, using this guide, you are going to install a leaked alpha build. Spyderdreams, the creator of this build, advises us that many features still don’t work. Being developed from the beta SDK launched a few weeks ago by Google, prepare yourself for a round of beta testing.

The full list of what it works and what it doesn’t is available below. Please note that they are still working around it, making features available each day. You can always check the official forum to see when a newer build is developed.

Before following our instructions, please back-up all of the existing date. Remember that this is just a leaked build, so things can go wrong at some point.

  1. Download the update and save it on the desktop. Rename it to “update.zip”.

  2. Transfer the file to the root of your SD card.

  3. Power off the phone.

  4. Start it in the “Recovery mode”.

  5. Use the “Volume up” / “Volume down” keys to scroll to “Apply update from SD card”, and then hit the “Power” button to confirm the choice.

  6. Wait until the device reboots and that’s it.
