How to manually update the Samsung Epic 4G to Android 2.2.1 (Froyo)

Thanks to XDA developers, all those reading this with a Samsung Epic 4G near them can now update to Android 2.2.1, the revised version of Froyo, due to an official leak. They have spotted the official update download link, hosted to Google servers. That means the file you are about to install holds the official OTA version of the update, so all of your fears regarding hacks and modified ROMs can be dismissed. The guide bellow can be completed by all types of users, so don’t worry about being stuck.

To figure things out, this guide is used to update the Samsung Epic 4G to Android 2.2.1 and can be performed even if you are unlocked. Those who are strapped to their carriers, feel free to join but take note as Sprint may bring updates to the version. This is just a pre-release build, leaked from Sprint headquarters.

  1. Download this file and rename it to “update.zip”.

  2. Connect the Epic 4G to your MAC/PC using an USB cable and transfer the file above to the root folder of the SD card. That means no folders.

  3. Shut down the phone.

  4. Enter Recovery Mode by holding the “Volume Down”, “Camera” and “Power” buttons pressed. While in Recovery Mode, you can navigate using the Volume buttons.

  5. Select the “Apply sdcard:update.zip” option.

  6. All you have to do now is wait for the phone to restart and you should be updated.
