How to jailbreak iPhone 3G/3GS iOS 4.2.1 with Redsn0w (PC/MAC)

In the following guide you will learn how to jailbreak the iPhone 3G, 3GS (old bootrom) running on iOS 4.2.1, using Redsn0w 0.9.6B5. This tool works for both PC ( Windows ) and MAC ( MAC OS X ) users and offers an untethered jailbreak along with the capabilities of upgrading the baseband and unlocking. Although the tool can be used for any iDevice out there, meaning iPhone 4, 3GS with new bootrom, iPad, iPod Touch 2G, 3G, 4, they will not enjoy the untethered state. That means you will have to do these steps over and over again, each time you reboot the iDevice.

To get all things straight, jailbreaking the iPhone 3G and 3GS (old bootrom) on iOS 4.2.1 with Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 will offer an untethered jailbreak. That means you will only have to follow the steps bellow once. The tool can be used by all users out there, disregarding their platforms, and has the biggest advantage out there.

Unlocking is possible using the Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 tool because it has one new feature. During our guide, you will the option of updating your baseband to a new version: 06.15.00, which is unlockable using Ultrasn0w ( a link will be posted soon for the unlocking procedure ). This can only be done for iPhone 3G and 3GS users, with iOS 4.2.1, and it has its own disadvantages:

  • The baseband is currently retrieved directly from Apple servers. Being an “old” baseband, which Apple forgot to patch, making “hackers” take advantage of it, it would probably be removed. That means the tool will have a long delay because the servers are full at the moment and, probably, a minor update will appear to change the download location once Apple removes the file.

  • You cannot downgrade from 06.15.00, meaning you will void the warranty.

  • If Apple issues a new update containing important fixes, that has the0 5.xx.xx number ( not 06.xx.xx ), you will not be able to update it.

  • The iOS 4.2.1 and baseband 06.15.00 create a deadly combination that won’t allow you from now on to restore to the stock firmware. You will only be able to restore to custom firmware files ( .IPSW ).

Those who agree to all those above, continue by downloading these files. Also, make sure you have the latest iTunes version installed.
