How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 iOS 4.1 with Sn0wBreeze 2.1 (PC)

Few days ago Sn0wBreeze 2.1 has been launched, allowing PC users worldwide to jailbreak the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, iPod Touch 2G, 3G, 4, iPad and the Appe TV 2, while preserving the baseband. This means you will be able to unlock using a simple guide and, continue with the unlocking when you update to iOS 4.2 and jailbreak it with a compatible Sn0wBreeze version. The tool works for iOS 4.1 and it is undependable of any bootroom versions or baseband numbers. That means this works for any device listed above that has iOS 4.1 installed.

By jailbreaking iOS 4.1 on the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, iPod Touch 2G, 3G, 4, iPad or the Apple TV 2, with Sn0wBreeze 2.1, you get access to numerous applications through the Cydia portal. You also can go one step further and unlock the device, using the Ultrasn0w guide ( it may say 3G, but the steps remain the same ) , if the baseband you had before starting this guide was unlockable.

Other requirements include this guide to be performed using a Windows 7 / Vista running PC, that has .NET Framework 2.0 installed. The Sn0wBreeze 2.1 program along with iTunes 10 and a stock iOS 4.1 firmware will be needed, but they will be downloaded as we proceed into the jailbreaking guide.

Jailbreaking Mascot

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 on iOS 4.1 using Sn0wBreeze 2.1
  1. Download and install Sn0wBreeze 2.1. Now start it using administrator rights ( Right click on the file -> Run as Administrator ).

  2. Connect the iDevice to the PC, using the USB cable. A splash window will appear, just like bellow, where you will have to click on the blue icon to continue. Do it.

  3. Choose Expert Mode and then hit on blue.

  4. Download the stock iOS 4.1 firmware and save it on the desktop.

  5. Getting back to the Sn0wBreeze 2.1 window, click on Browse and then go to the desktop. Select the iOS 4.1 firmware previously downloaded.

  6. Sn0wBreeze will now show a Warning window, like bellow. Read it carefully, and if do comply with all the requirements asked, click “I Understand”. Don’t get scared on the iPhone 3GS line, or on already jailbroken one, as a few steps bellow will clear all things out.

  7. On the next window click on General and then on the blue arrow to continue.

  8. We will now customize the jailbreaking options. You can freely choose any options you like here, except two. For those who have the device factory unlocked, do not check the first box. This one is only for those who want to hacktivate their gadgets. Those with an iPhone 3GS that have a new bootroom, you must check the last box ( use iBooty ).

  9. On the next screen you can pre-install packages. Add the ones you like from default repos, or .deb files you already saved on the computer. Adding new repos it’s not allowed at this step.

  10. Now to customize the boot and recovery logos. Use the default ones or choose one of your one, just make sure that they are .png files with dimension below 320×480 pixels, under 100kb and a minimum of one transparent pixel.

  11. Once you click the blue arrow, jailbreaking will start. You will be asked if you already have jailbreak. Choose NO, no matter if you are or not.

  12. Now put the device into the DFU or recovery modes. You can do this automatically using RecBoot, or manually: turn off the device ( while still connected to the PC ) and then hold the Home and Power buttons pressed for 10 seconds, then release the power button ( for the Apple TV is a little more complicated ).

  13. Open iTunes 10 ( Download and install it if you don’t have it ) and click OK on the “found device in recovery mode” message.

  14. Hold down the “Shift” key and click on restore. Choose the custom firmware we made above, and not the stock version. To distinguish the two, notice that the custom created one has sn0wbreeze_ before the name.

  15. Wait for iTunes 10 to finish the job and it’s done.
