How to Jailbreak AppleTV 2G iOS 4.1 with PwnageTool 4.1.2

In the following post you will learn how to jailbreak the Apple TV 2G, using PwnageTool 4.1.2. You can do this to get access to various apps that will soon be developed (nitoTV for example) and for the simple fact of being free. This guide will offer you jailbreaking capabilities for the rest of your life, because PwnageTool it’s a tool based on Limera1n. What does that mean? Well, Limera1n uses a bootrom exploit that cannot be patched using future firmware updates (like iOS 4.1, 4.2 etc). In order to fix this, Apple should replace a piece of your hardware; chances are slim.

Being in the first era of the jailbreaking community, the AppleTV 2G can only perform line commands using SSH. It will take time until developers will come up with methods to use the AppeTV 2G by remote, instead of the command line. Other interesting things owners can do with a jailbroken AppleTV 2G is to use tools like ifunbox to move things around. This is possible because by jailbreaking with PwnageTool 4.1.2 you get access to afc2.

Compatibility: This works only for MAC users that have the latest iTunes version installed.

  8. All you have to do now is to wait until the process ends. This will take a while, so don’t do anything silly.
