How to update the Motorola CliQ to Android 2.1 (Éclair): Install Guide

Just yesterday Motorola launched the Android 2.1(Éclair) update for the Motorola CliQ users. This was the first testing batch, aimed only at a small proportion of users, for testing reasons. For those who didn’t make it into the first wave, we can help you. Motorola accidentally posted the update instructions on their official website, along with the download mirror. We saved the instructions and the 2.1 update, just in case they restricted the page. And guess what happened? They did.

In the following guide you will learn how to update the Motorola CliQ to Android 2.1, also known as Éclair. This file is exactly as the OTA update (the one Motorola sent yesterday), and it’s meant for users with MotoBlur that want to receive enhanced MotoBlur and some improvements, all listed on the official website.

In order to update the Motorola CliQ with MotoBlur to Android 2.1 you will need a fully charged cellphone with an active SIM card, a Motorola USB cable, a microSD card with minimum 100 MB available and at least 15 MB free of internal memory, which will disappear forever. As for the software requirements, you need to have at least Android 1.5 (Cupcake) with the latest MotoBlur version (1.4.8.MB200 or higher).

What will be deleted and not: the Instant Messenger login information will be deleted, all of your Android Market apps will be preserved, some of your widgets will disappear because Moto added resizable widgets in this update, all of your system settings will fade away, your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections will be preserved, but some of them will not work anymore and your contact information will be stored. Unfortunately, the contact shortcuts for your desktop will be removed. Keep in mind that this upgrade will add additional software programs, so it may slow the phone a bit.
