  1. First you need to download the PwnageTool 4.0.1. Click here.

  2. Now, you need to download msft.guy’s PwnageTool Bundle edition and save it to your desktop. Click here to download it.

  3. Download the iOS 4.2 for your iPhone 3GS here, and the iTunes 10 for Mac from here. To download the iOS 4.2 Beta 2 you need to be a registered developer.

  4. Now you need to copy the PwnageTool 4.0.1 , that you previously downloaded, to your computer’s desktop. Right-Click it and select ‘Show Package Contents’.

  5. Now, go to ‘Contents > Resources > FirmwareBundles’ and paste in  the ‘iPhone2,1_4.2_8C5091e.bundle’ file and close the FirmwareBundles folder.

  7. Start the patched edition of PwnageTool and choose the iPhone 3GS as the device you’re currently using and the PwnageTool will select the iOS 4.2 firmware automatically.

  8. Now you need to configure the iPhone to use the custom firmware 4.2 file created previously with the PwnageTool. Start the iTunes and click the phone icon in it. Now hit the left ‘alt’ button ( ‘Shift’ key in Windows ) and keep it pressed, and after that you need to click the ‘Restore’ button in iTunes. After this action you can release the keyboard button.

  9. iTunes will ask you to load the custom firmware 4.2 and you need to select the ‘.ipsw’ custom file and press ‘Open’.

  10. Now that you did all these, iTunes will start its task of taking care of the rest of the steps. Do not do anything and let iTunes complete its job in order to successfully install the iOS 4.2 Beta 2 on your iPhone 3GS.

  11. When the installation of iOS 4.2 Beta 2 on your iPhone 3GS will be completed,  the device will automatically be restarted and after the iPhone powers back on, it will feature the iOS 4.2 Beta 2. Enjoy.
