How To Reset / Retrieve A Lost Login Password On MacBook / Mac OS X

Remembering a password is not an easy task, and we all forget passwords, usernames, names and other important privacy details that you need in order to login on several accounts that you own in the technology universe. This post has been created for users that want to recover or reset their lost login passwords for MacBook or for the Mac OS X, and if you follow the instructions in this post you will be able to retrieve / reset all of them easily.

How To Reset Any Password, Except The Administrator Account In Mac OS X 10.2 Through 10.2.8

All the account passwords can be easily reseted right from the Mac OS X. You can reset all of them, but the Administer Account password can’t be reseted.

  1. First you need to login by entering your administrator account details.

  2. Go to System Preferences, that can be found in the Apple menu.

  3. Select the Accounts icon, before that you need to make sure that the lock is unlocked, it can be found in the lower left hand corner. If it isn’t unlocked, you need to unlock it by clicking on it. Please note that you might be forced to enter your admin password.

  4. Now you need to choose which username’s password you want to edit. After you’ve selected the username go to next step.

  5. Click ‘Reset Password’ / ‘Change Password’ button, name depends on the OS version you currently use. After you clicked that button you will be asked to enter and verify the new password. If you click the Reset password button, you will asked to confirm the action, do it.

How To Reset Any Password, Except The Administrator Account In Mac OS X 10.1.5 Or Earlier Editions
  1. Login into your OS X with your Admin account details.

  2. Go to System Preferences from the Apple Menu.

  3. Select Users in the View Menu. You need to be sure that the lock is unlocked, and if it isn’t you need to click it and it will be unlocked. The lock is located in the lower left hand corner.

  4. Now you need to chose which username you want to have its password changed. Select the Edit user option.

  5. Type in the new password and hit the Save button.

How To Reset The Administrator’s Account Password

If you managed to lose the Administrator Account password, you will be needing an OS X disk that will help you in reseting the password. The OS X disk that you will need is the ‘installation disk 1′, which came with the PC when you bought it. Follow the steps below to reset your Administrator’s Account password :

  1. Insert the OS X disk and reboot your computer.

  2. Immediately after you hear the chime sound when the PC is restarting, you need to press and hold down the ‘C’ key. If ‘C’ key doesn’t do the trick and the computer doesn’t boot from the OS X disk you will need to try and hold down the ‘option’ key.

  3. After you managed to boot from  the OS X disk, you should be able to see the OS X installer menu. Click Continue in first pop-up window.

  4. Now, if you look at the upper toolbar you will see various options. You need to select Installer Menu or Apple Menu ( it depends on the type of OS disk edition that you use).

  5. Now you need to select the Reset Password, it should be located under one of the upper menu.

  6. After you’ve selected the reset password option, you need to select your computer’s hard drive.

  7. Choose the hard drive and the name of your administrator account. Type in the new password that you wish to use in both cases and hit the Reset button.
