How to Root the HTC Droid Eris and install Android 2.1

Rooting a phone grants you the ability to modify system files, install forbidden applications, change icons and, in a few words, do anything you want.
As soon as you gain full access to your mobile, you can unlock it to use any SIM card you want and even enjoy tethering options.

The good news is that finally someone found a way to root the Droid Eris, and was so kindly to share his thoughts.

Before you get started, you need to know that if you root Eris, you will lose your warranty, and if you do not follow the steps bellow carefully, you can end up with a bricked phone.

Also, this process works only if you didn’t upgrade your OS to Android 2.1 in the past. It actually installs the Android 2.1 to your mobile and if you are currently using an older version of Android there isn’t a way to downgrade afterwards.

Please backup your data because it will be erased, but your contacts and apps can come back as soon as you sync with Google upon setup.

Root the HTC Droid Eris guide:

1. Download this file. It contains the .zip version of the Android 2.1 image.

2. Copy it onto your SD card, without making any folders.

3. Turn off the smartphone.

4. Start it into Bootloader Mode by holding down Power and Volume Down. The phone will automatically find the Android 2.1 zip image.

5. After the file is found, press the trackball in order to update.

6. With the update finished, you will have the Android 2.1 OS on your phone. Reboot.

7. Enjoy your rooted phone.
