08.02.2010

Motorola Droid is the smartphone from Motorola that is based on the Android OS. Although used for multimedia and internet access, users do not have full access by default. But there is a way you can jailbreak the Android and gain root access to Motorola Droid. This will allow you to do whatever you want on the Droid.

Why you should to rout the Motorola Droid? Because it gives users the possibility to enable features like multi-touch input(read HERE how to do it), gesture support and install applications that have not been approved to use by Verizon wireless or the Android OS. Another advantage of rooting is that you can enable tethering (read HERE how to tether Motorola Droid) or install personalized user interfaces.

How to root a Motorola Droid

Note1: Rooting the Motorola Droid may void the warranty, and can potentially brick the Droid device if not done correctly.

Note2: The following hack works for Motorola Droid with Android v2.0 or v2.0.1. If you want to update your Android 2.0 to Android 2.1 you can do it manually by downloading the update HERE, save it as update.zip , then copy it to SD card of the Motorola Droid to update it in recovery options which similar to steps below.

Follow the steps bellow to root your Motorola Droid:

  • Download the exploit ZIP file: droid-super_user.zip (The MD5 for the ZIP is cf653352967253e99d967498ffd9ce69)

  • Rename it to update.zip

  • Copy the update.zip into the Motorola Droid using one of the 2 methods bellow:

  1. Plug the Droid into computer via USB. On the Droid go to the Notifications bar, select USB Connected, and then press Mount. Once the device is mounted, the SD memory card will be shown as a removable device on computer. Copy the update.zip into the root (top) directory/folder of the SD card. Unmount the device when copying operation is done, and turn the Droid off.

  2. Turn the Droid off, and then pull the microSD card from the phone. Insert the microSD card into a card reader, and then copy the update.zip to its root folder. Put back the microSD card into the phone.

  • Boot the phone into recovery mode. You can do that by pressing and holding the X key (on the sliding keyboard) plus the Power button. Keep holding until the Motorola Droid screen shows an exclamation mark (!).

  • Apply the update by pressing Volume Up and Camera button, and then select the option (with D-pad on the physical keyboard) to update with update.zip file.

  • After the updating of your Motorola Droid completes, reboot the phone.

Once hacked, the Motorola Droid users now have root access. You can now do whatever you want, including enable tethering. ( read HERE ).
