How To Test Your Hard Drive/USB Drive Speed Using CrystalDiskMark

15.11.2009

If you are looking for a way to quickly test the speed of your hard drive or USB stick, then a small application called CrystalDiskMark may be your best choice.

The application is only 1.1 MB in size and the installing process lasts only a few seconds. There are no fancy settings you can choose during the install. You just select the location you want CrystalDiskMark to be installed to and you are done.

CrystalDiskMark will test the read and write speed of any Hard Drive or USB stick you have mounted on your computer. It will perform 6 tests: sequential reading, sequential writing, random 512Kb reading and writing and random 4Kb reading and writing.

How To Test Your Hard Drive/USB Drive Speed Using CrystalDiskMark

As far as the sequential reading and writing tests are concerned you can set how much data it should read/write. It is set by default to 100MB, but you can choose to test the drive with 50MB, 500MB or 1GB (1000MB). You can also set the number of repetitions for each test. Again, the standard setting is 5 repetitions for each test (the final result is the average of all results). You can choose from 1 to 9 repetitions (we recommend that you use it with 5 or more repetitions for better results).

Now all you have to do is select the drive you want to test and click start. You can choose to perform all tests or the sequential, random 512kb and random 4kb individually.

CrystalDiskMark is completely free to download and use and if you want to test a drive’s speed but are not a power user, we recommend that you give CrystalDiskMark a try. Click here to download CrystalDiskMark for free.
